Maker: unknown Model: brass multiplier spike winch reel Approximate year of manufacture: early 1800’s Condition: good antique original Material: brass Length/ diameter: 40mm x 46mm wide Country of manufacture: England Ideal use: fishing reel display Notes: This is an extremely rare antique brass wide drum multiplier spike fitting winch. Dating from the early 1800’s, this is a museum quality reel. It shows the transition from a standard spike reel to a wide drum geared winch that later appeared with both perforated foot and collar fittings. It measures 40mm in diameter, and 46mm across the frame making this a wide drum example. A heavy hand made reel with a good solid feel. The raised front plate housed the gearing to make the multiplier action. A working on-off rim pin-stop lever locks and unlocks the drum. Crescent shaped offset crank handle with turned brass knob indicating it’s an early reel. Hand formed original steel centre lock screw. Three brass pillars are secured with handmade steel screws to the front housing and rivetted to the rear. Original brass tapered spike on bridge cross support with the brass lyre screw. These reels only fit rods with a drilled hole to accept the spike. Once again this is a rare transitional spike winch for the collector. It forms part of a larger collection we have listed, see the last image
