nbsp; A NEW WAVE OF BLACK FEMALE ARTISTS has been making strides in the art world, over the past several years, with major exhibitions, museum acquisitions, collector support, gallery representation, and auction records that most practitioners don’t see in their entire careers. These recent publications are the first major volumes to document the individual practices of 10 artists at the dawn of their acclaim. Most of the artists are in their 30s. A couple are in their 40s and 50s. Nearly all of them focus on portraits or figuration. Amy Sherald, 46, famously painted First Lady Michelle Obama’s official portrait for the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.
