A great Simplicity sewing pattern for women's 18th century underpinnings - mid-18th century stays (corset), shift, and pocket hoops.
Simplicity 8162 18th Century Underpinnings Sewing Pattern creates the chemise, stays (corset), and bum pad for your 18th century costume. The shift features an very adjustable drawstring neckline with built-in sleeve ruffles and tucker. The ruffles are optional. Please note that this shift is not historically accurate, but intended for a very basic underlayer to fit a wide range of sizes. The stays (corset) are based on original pattern shapes, featuring bound tabs and adjustable front and back lacing. Please note that this pattern tends to run short-waisted - make a mockup! Here are our tips for altering your stays pattern. The bum pad is a large, round shape perfect for creating the full skirted silhouette of the 18th century. This can be worn for the 1740s - early 1790s. This pattern makes a great base for Simplicity 8161 or the Italian Gown in The American Duchess Guide to 18th Century Dressmaking. Suggested Fabrics - Shift - lightweight, tightly-woven linen or cotton. Stays - canvas, poplin, twill, heavy linen. Bumpad - linen or cotton.
